Local Outreach

Through service projects that meet real needs, Living Word seeks to take an active role in sharing Christ's love with those around us.

Food for the Hungry in York

York County Food Bank
Each Thanksgiving, Living Word launches a non-perishable food drive for the York County Food Bank. The collection helps fight hunger in our cities, suburbs, and rural areas.

Our Daily Bread
Four times a year, on the 5th Monday of the month, Living Word provides a hot lunch to inner city York residents at Our Daily Bread. People are needed to prepare chili at home and bring it to the Church the day before, and people are needed on Monday at Our Daily Bread to serve the meal.

Compassion York
Four to six times a year, Living Word supports the Compassion York ministry by providing a hot meal to city residents on Sunday evenings. People are needed to prepare and donate food items for the meal, and people are needed to go into the city to serve the meal at various locations.

Get Involved
Lobby sign ups a few weeks ahead of time provide the avenue for people to participate in either of these outreach opportunities.
Salem Square Neighborhood Outreach

Living Word has been involved in the west end of the City of York for a number of years in the neighborhood known as Salem Square.

Our involvement spans the spectrum from clean sweeps to mentoring; from installing safety lights to tutoring; from rehabbing a house to Board membership on the Salem Square Community Association. Living Word’s Christmas offerings have strongly supported Salem Square Community Association (SSCA) over the past 6 years.

Our vision is to help bring hope back into this neighborhood, and to be a catalyst for a cleaner, safer and more prosperous place for York people to live, work, play and worship.

RECENT PROJECTS

Home Ownership Courses
SSCA is offering a 10-week course to city residents to work toward the goal of home ownership. This initiative is part of Salem Square’s Shoulder-to-Shoulder ministry. There are currently 20 participants working through the 10-week financial training, which is facilitated by various people from Living Word. The participants are learning skills such as maximizing income, learning how to get out of debt, understanding cash flow, options for savings and checking accounts, and more.

Residential Gate Installation
A group of individuals from Living Word gathered to help SSCA install gates between homes in this West End community. The York Police have since credited the gates with the capture of 15 “bad guys.”
